Why do people give gifts and expect one in return? It is sillyness. I’m just going to come right out and say this: if you give a gift expecting one in return you ride with Hitler.
The second you give a gift, with the explicit or implicit expectation of receiving one in kind, you have really taken something away. You have said “I have spent $x on you, on something you had no control over. I now expect you to do the same, whether you want to or not.”
Now the hapless victim of your “gift” has two choices. Break your unreasonable social contract, or sacrifice their time and money to appease you. Basically they will have paid $x for an item they may or may not have even wanted!
I ripped off the title’s “style” from the episode titles for The Big Bang Theory.
Sometimes just having the gift receiver enjoy their present is return enough. For example just having the opportunity to watch the gift recipient try and fight their way through 1.2kg of jellybellies is a memory that keeps me warm at night.
